Bharathi Kalai Mandram presented
a unique and innovative cultural program at the Shaab Garden auditorium
for its members on Nov 9 to mark the year of "Women's Empowerment".
Entitled "Magalir Mattum", the event was produced, coordinated,
and presented completely by the ladies of the association.
The program began with a presentation of a few of Bharathiyar's
poem set to delightful tune, bringing back the memories of this
great poet. This was followed by a lively panel discussion on 'who
is the spendthrift in the family - husband or wife?' which was moderated
by the Tamil scholar Kaviko Abdul Rahman.
The ladies enthralled the packed and appreciative audience with
witty comments and often thought provoking view on today's family
life. The 'warring parties' sparring and mutual digs at each others
often brought down the house in the peals of laughter. It was indeed
heartening to see the ladies take up the cudgels on behalf of the
men folk - all in all it was no holds barred debate and the honors
were equally shared.
This was followed by the grateful kummi or dandiya dance. The dancers
captivated the audience with their graceful movements and by the
wonderful way in which they wove and unwove intricate patterns to
lively beat.
The skit which came next looked at family live from a new angle.
In the novel skit the wife goes to work and husband attends to the
household chores and of course the nagging in-laws. The problems
which ensue helps them and their family (and the audience) understand
'husband-wife relations' in the scheme of things and the need for
mutual respect and support for each other. This play was presented
ably by the ladies (donning the roles of the male characters as
well) and was well received.
Overall the program brought
home the point that our women are second to none in any field, when
given a responsibility they can execute the task to perfection.
Kudos to them and the entire team.
